The National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites grant applications for investigator-initiated Program Projects (P01) in any area of cancer research. The P01 funding mechanism supports integrated, multi-project research programs involving several independent investigators who share knowledge and common resources while working towards a unifying overall scientific goal. The individual projects may represent multiple disciplines and/or address several discrete research aspects pertinent to one or more disciplines.
In addition, the research projects are supported by two or more shared cores including an administrative core. All projects must be relevant to the common unifying central theme or focus, and the overall objective of the entire Program. The NCI provides support for Program Projects in the belief that an integrated and collaborative research effort can accelerate the acquisition of knowledge more effectively than a simple aggregate of research projects that have no interaction or thematic integration. As such, a multi-disciplinary team of experienced investigators are essential for the success of the program with a well-defined unifying research theme.
The proposed P01 session will begin with an introduction of P01 funding mechanism by the NCI program director, followed by scientific presentations by four NCI funded P01 investigators. The session will conclude with a discussion on the policies and guidelines for preparing a successful P01 application.
