Image Data Science (IDS) Interest Group

Data science has gained much interest recently with advances in data mining and analytic platforms. As an extension, medical image data is rich with information. The information embedded in images has traditionally been studied in the context of region-based (i.e., regions of interest) analysis. More recently, the spatial information in images has been interrogated with the advances in multi-modality quantitative imaging methodologies and radiomic pipelines to develop classes of image features and morphology. Since images represent the phenotype of the underlying biology, perhaps not surprisingly, numerous studies have also established correlations between quantitative image features and genomic, proteomic, and pathologic data. Importantly, there is a large body of works with applications of image data science demonstrating efficacy in disease detection, prediction therapeutic response, and patient stratification among other applications.

In this context, the overall mission statement of the IDS-IG is to advance the application of image data science across all research domains of interest to members of the WMIS.

The IDS-IG will focus on the following areas of research to advance its mission:

  • Applications and advances in quantitative imaging, radiomics and computational imaging
  • Imaging physics to ensure QA/QC and standardized application of image data science when applicable
  • Machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence in imaging and decision science
  • Integration of image data science with multi-scale information
  • Development of computational models of human disease in concert with imaging data
  • Imaging informatics as a platform to integrate and automate image data science pipelines
WMIS invites you to find your place to grow, collaborate and make a difference – join the IDS Interest Group today.

Members: Interest Groups are open to current WMIS Members. There is an annual Interest Group membership fee of $20 which is requested to help offset administrative costs. To join an interest group, please click the button below.

If you are not a current WMIS member, please click the button below and create a new profile to join WMIS and join interest groups.

Proposed Activities

To achieve their mission IDS proposes to:

  • Hold workshops during WMIC annual meetings
  • Establish an IDS-IG networking event to occur during WMIC annual meetings. The format and content of the networking event will be determined by the IDS-IG Secretary and presented to WMIS Board of Trustees (BOT) for consideration.
  • Organize educational sessions on advances, applications, and resources in image data science
  • Post videos from key talks and offer webinars
  • Establish a platform for members of the society to learn about advances and resources in image data science
  • Promote application of image data science in both preclinical and clinical research, including harmonization of preclinical and clinical efforts in the context of co-clinical trials
  • Provide an environment to develop standards and best-practices in application of image data science, in both preclinical and clinical settings
  • Establish a channel for leadership and collaboration with other societies such as RSNA, SNMMI, ISMRM to coordinate efforts in education and standardization of image data science.
