FAQ for Mentees

Frequently Asked Questions for Mentees:

What are the requirements for being a mentee?
As a Mentee, you must not only be a current WMIS member but also make sure you are ready to commit to the 6-month program and be willing to enrich, further or advance your career.

How will the mentoring meetings work?
Each mentor will be matched with 2-3 mentees. The communication platform will be through the Qooper mentoring system which allows for scheduling meetings and video conferences through your mobile phone or through the web. An invitation code to access the mentoring app will be sent to you at the start of the program.

What is my role as a mentee?
Your role as a mentee is to be prepared with 3 goals for the program and objectives for what you hope to achieve, be eager to learn, be ambitious, and absorb the mentor’s and peers’ knowledge.

What is the commitment time?
The program will last the 6-month period of April – September 2020. Ideally, mentees should plan to communicate with their group a minimum of one time per month. Ultimately, this will be decided by you and your mentoring group.

How do we schedule the meetings with our mentor?
It is a good idea to schedule the dates for the next five meetings at the first meeting. This way, your team will get a commitment upfront and reserve the meetings on their schedules. The Qooper app will allow you to set the meetings at your discretion using the meeting scheduler module.

What if I have to reschedule a meeting?
Balancing work, school, social experiences and relationships can be challenging. Remember to be respectful of your mentor’s time. If you need to reschedule a meeting for any reason, be sure to communicate this to your mentor in a timely manner. You should expect the same treatment from your mentor!

What should I be prepared to discuss with my mentor?
Identify questions in advance of your meetings to ensure two-way communication. Identify topics relevant to your career stage and upcoming career goals. Some examples for discussion are how to approach salary negotiations, résumé building, dealing with conflicts, career transitions, and networking.

How are mentor/mentee matches made?
WMIS will try to match our mentee applicants by the preferences stated in their application. We will review goals and objectives and based on the Qooper algorithm, we will match the best possible mentor and mentees from our pool of candidates.

Can I switch mentors part way through the program?
We do our best to match mentees and mentors based on the information provided in their applications. Due to the limited number of mentors, we encourage matched mentees and mentors to remain paired. If you have a concern, please contact Rosemery Membreno at rmembreno@wmis.org.

Under what circumstances can I get a refund? How far into the program is this an option?
No refunds will be issued.

Is the $40/$60 fee a one time for the entire 6-month program?
Yes, Sylvia Anderson will be in contact if accepted into the program.

Am I still able to participate in the WMIS Mentor Network if I will not be attending WMIC 2020 for the closing event?
Yes, the closing event is a way for our global mentors and mentees to come together for a meet-and-greet in person. We highly encourage you to attend, but it is not mandatory.
